Taylors Unveils 150 Year Old Pre-Phylloxera Port

Taylors has unveiled an exceptionally rare, 150 year old pre-phylloxera tawny port.

Phylloxera is microscopic aphid that nearly destroyed all of France’s vineyards between 1860 and 1900. As a result, any grape-based drink that hails from before that tumultous period is highly collectible.

Taylor’s Scion as it is called has been maturing in the Douro since 1855 and was bought in cask by the company earlier this year. Instead of mixing it with any of its 30 and 40 year old tawny blends, they have decided to release this pre-phylloxera wine at cost of £2,500 ($3,935) per bottle.

Adrian Bridge, CEO of The Fladgate Partnership (who own Taylor’s) said: “This wine still has some nice acidity, which gives some bite to the wine and gives something that is just quite extraordinary.”

Packaged in a special wooden box based on a 19th century instrument case, the port is limited to 1,400 bottles.
